Modern Foreign Languages
“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things.” Flora Lewis.
The MFL Department at TWS aims to inspire pupils to embark on a life-long enjoyment of languages and develop an understanding, interest, respect and empathy for other nationalities and cultures.
Subject Leader: Ms M Amboage (marisa.amboage.swale.at)
The department currently offers Spanish and French at KS3 and KS4.
Our ethos is to encourage pupils to understand the joy of manipulating and playing with language. Our lessons are principally focused on developing listening and speaking skills, as these will prove to be the most useful in the real world. There are more regular opportunities for extended reading and writing as the pupils transition towards KS4.
We view MFL as a five-year course and as a result, from Year 7 onwards, we provide pupils with an early understanding of what is required for success at Year 11. At KS4, there is more of a focus on exam-style tasks. We follow the AQA GCSE specification.
Home Learning
Regular learning of vocabulary is essential. We will discuss strategies in lessons, but this should be happening consistently outside of lessons, so that we can focus on applying our knowledge during class. Little and often is the best approach (e.g. five minutes, twice a day). If no homework tasks have been set on google classroom, pupil must assume that they should continue revising their Knowledge Organiser, as we usually test vocabulary once a week.
